The best halal chicken wings in Singapore

Since I was young I’ve loved chicken wings, and although I now have a more diverse rotation of favourites (sashimi and steak included), chicken wings remain my go-to comfort food.

When I was a kid I’d watch my mum coat them in turmeric before deep frying them to a golden brown, a mixture of fascination and anticipation balling up in me. As a teen I would eat my fill at KFC, before graduating to Pizza Hut’s sweet ‘n spicy drumlets in the twilight of my teenage years.

Now, I pretty much have to sample the chicken wings of any restaurant I go to, provided there aren’t other more pressing items on the menu (salted egg ANYTHING, for instance), so I thought it would be fun to do a round-up of my current favourites!

These halal chicken wings are ranked from best to less best, but the bottom line is they’re all really good. For those who are wondering, the ratings are determined based on the taste, texture, quantity, and price of the wings (and the wings alone).

1. Royz et Vous’ Buffalo Wings

The buffalo wings at Royz et Vous are without a doubt the holy grail of halal buffalo wings in Singapore. These bad boys are coated in buffalo sauce made with cili padi (bird’s eye chilli), and manage to be simultaneously crispy and juicy. The sauce is a winning trio of sweet, tangy, and VERY spicy flavours at the same time. It’s satisfyingly shiok. The accompanying sour cream dip will help pare down the fiery sauce for those with a lower tolerance for spicy flavours.

2. The Malayan Council’s Malayan Wings

These Malayan Wings from The Malaysian Council taste reassuringly like homecooked ayam kicap (soy sauce chicken) with some embellishments – the crispy yet juicy wings are garnished generously with chilli seeds, and lie atop a bed of cherry tomatoes and salad leaves (including arugula, which adds a beautiful nutty taste to the sauce). The sauce itself is a skillful balance of peppery, spicy, and savoury flavours. YUMMMM.

3. Rasa Istimewa C2K’s Prawn Paste Chicken

Located at Choa Chu Kang Park, Rasa Istimewa C2K prides itself its specialty item, the prawn paste chicken. It is no wonder that they always get it done just right – the skin is crispy but not too oily, and the meat inside is tender.  The prawn paste flavour is just strong enough for the wings to be satisfying without overwhelming your tastebuds.

4. Penang Culture’s Belacan Wings

Penang Culture’s belacan wings are SO delicious – the skin is beautifully crispy and umami, while the chicken meat within is flavourful and succulent. I’m not sure what sorcery they use, but the wings never taste too oily despite having been deep-fried. There are 4 Penang Culture outlets around, but I usually have these chicken wings at the Changi Airport Terminal 2 location.

My Secret Hideout Peachy’s is a hole-in-the-wall on North Bridge Road that specialises in affordable and fuss-free Western fare. Their buffalo wings are lightly coated in a balanced trio of sweet, spicy, and barbecue flavours. Though the chicken itself is not the plumpest, the reasonable price and generous portion make these wings the perfect choice to satisfy any major buffalo wings cravings (case in point – I destroyed a whole plate by myself as a pre-dinner appetiser).

6. Savoury’s Buffalo Wings

Savoury at Jalan Kayu serves up a mean platter of buffalo wings coated in thick barbecue sauce that leans towards sweet rather than spicy. The chicken wings are juicy and tasty, with a very attractive price tag to boot. Perfect for those with a lower threshold for spicy food.

Special mentions:

4 Fingers – I cannot get enough of their hot drummettes, and will readily eat 15 pieces in one sitting (this I know from experience). For reasons that are beyond me, 4 Fingers chicken has been extremely polarising among my friends – those who hate them are at parity with those who love them; food is so subjective. It’s good to note though that 4 Fingers chicken contains no MSG and no preservatives, so you feel a little less guilty  when inhaling a whole platter of them.

Chicken Supremo – This is a neighbourhood Western food joint at Blk 493, Jurong West St 41 that has been selling life-changing chicken wings and whole spring chickens since I was a wee 5-year-old lass in 1991 (no, don’t calculate!). The same industrious man has been selling the chicken from day one, and now works with a lovely lady partner who is more customer-facing while he cooks away in the back. The chicken wings used to cost S$1 for a full wing (i.e. 2 pieces!), yet now after literally 25 years, the price has risen by a mere 30 cents, to S$1.30. I guess inflation missed this place like Magellan missed the East Indies.

Last weekend I had brunch at a fairly-new halal restaurant at Jalan Kayu called Savoury together with my girlfriends, one of whom had previously tried it and breathlessly raved about it. It was kind of a pain getting there for a Westie like me (makes gangster West-side hand signs), but I did it anyway because I am a Conqueror, as Estelle defiantly sings, and also I will travel for food, it ain’t no thang.

Love the high ceilings, and cosy interiors. It felt pretty spacious inside (you can’t really see in this photo, sorry!).

Located right next to Le Steak by Chef Amri (in what I feel is a great arrow to the knee for said establishment, because as you will find out later, Savoury makes GREAT steak. Sorry #spoilers), Savoury specialises in Western fare such as steak, pasta, and gelato! The establishment got its halal certification from MUIS in August 2015, so now you can eat entirely guilt-free and bring the most was-was of your Muslim clan there to eat!

The menu has quite an impressive array of dishes, but my attention was immediately drawn to the very meat-heavy mains section:

As you guys know (or will come to know soon enough), I love chicken wings and have eaten probably my body weight in them in the past year alone, so naturally I had to try the Buffalo Wings (S$10.80) from Savoury:

Savoury’s version of buffalo wings were really delicious! Very tasty and lip-smacking good, BUT, they were not as spicy as I would’ve liked. Plus kind of wish they had been just the slightest bit more saucy, but that is really a personal preference. I like when the sauce spreads through your whole mouth when you chew down on the chicken, and when there is a lot of excess sauce to lick off of your fingers at the end :/ So gross right? Whatevs.

Also, and this is nitpicking a little, the wings did not come with any blue cheese or sour cream sauce, which I think is a significant detail especially since the sauce-meat ratio is only just sufficient (which, to a sauce-hound like me, is not enough). In the battle between Savoury’s and Royz et Vous’ buffalo wings, I’m afraid Royz et Vous wins out. The REV version is spicier, saucier, and comes with a sour cream dip for variety! But of course these are all subjective preferences so you kids can decide which version you’d prefer. Also, Savoury’s is $2 cheaper than REV’s, so that could factor into your decision too. For me, the Savoury buffalo wings get a solid 8.5/10.

For my main dish I decided to go for the Beef Tenderloin (S$29.80) in medium done-ness. The pan-fried New Zealand beef comes with black pepper sauce and a side of potato gratin:

YUM this was REALLY good!!! The black pepper sauce had just enough punch without being too heaty in your throat, and the meat was really tender and tendon-free! (looking at you, Royals Steak House) My only gripe about the meat was that I thought it was overdone, and therefore slightly dry. This was of course mitigated by the pepper sauce, so it wasn’t too bad. Plus, the meat tasted so good I was convinced it would taste phenomenal if cooked slightly less. For those who prefer their meats pinker and juicier, I would definitely recommend taking the plunge and opting for medium rare in the future. If not, then ok medium should work for you. Shoutout here to the potato gratin which was so creamy and delicious. This dish gets 8/10, with a point docked for the tenderloin being overcooked.

One of my friends ordered the Agnolotti (S$18.80), which is fresh pasta stuffed with fresh prawns and crab meat in a tomato and cream sauce:

Yum the sauce was really delicious!! Rich, savoury, slightly tangy, and creamy all at once. Perf. The pasta had a good texture and was tender, but my personal opinion is that the stuffing itself could have been slightly tastier so the pasta wouldn’t have to rely on the strength of the sauce to carry the dish. Still a very tasty pasta dish on the whole though! 8/10

We ended off with the Salted Caramel Waffle with 2 Scoops (S$17), and we went with the Peach sorbet and Snickers flavours:

The gelato spread – they have the standard chocolaty sweet ones, assorted sorbets, and also – OMG – salted egg ice cream!! It tasted like the custard in salted egg buns.

Muumuuumuuuhhh SO CUTE HOW TO EAT!

Guys, the peach sorbet was SO YUMMYYYY. It wasn’t as thin or tart as regular sorbet, but tasted a little like frozen peach Vitagen. Which I love. The snickers flavour was aiiight; I’m not a huge fan of nuts (particularly peanuts) in my ice cream unless they’re candied pecans, but my friends wanted it so we compromised 🙂 THE WAFFLES THOUGH!! Were so good! So fluffy and crisp and light, but still substantial! I loved the salted caramel sauce drizzled on the plate,YUM. Also if you couldn’t already tell, LOVE the presentation!! The little creatures were so adorable, and their strawberry hats tasted very sweet! It felt weird lopping off their heads and scooping it into my mouth, but well food is food. The ice cream men were also standing on a layer of wafer that separated the ice cream from the waffle, so it wouldn’t become a mushy creamy mess so quickly! I LOVED that attention to detail. 10/10

On the whole, Savoury is a GREAT addition to the canon of restaurants at Jalan Kayu, and I would definitely come back here to have the steak again and again. Finally a worthy competitor to Krave’s Steak! I am also curious to try the other things on the menu, so rest assured I will report back when that time comes 🙂

I first went to Royz et Vous, back when it was at Bali Lane, with my classmate one day after Arabic class on Bussorah St (check out Al Markaz, it’s great!) and enjoyed the Buffalo Wings tremendously. So when I found out that it had moved to Telok Ayer, I was determined to check it out. Afterall, it was a welcome move, as the Telok Ayer/Chinatown area could use more quality halal establishments.

The new Royz et Vous is a short walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT station, and an even shorter one from Telok Ayer MRT station, if you are coming on the Downtown Line. Finding it is relatively easy as the restaurant faces the Thian Hock Keng temple, the oldest Hokkien temple in Singapore. I arrived there one weekday evening around 630pm, and was pleased by the new interior of the place:

Halal champagne and wine! What a novelty. I tasted alcohol-free beer in Spain once and HAAAATED it. Wonder how I’d feel about these ones.

My cousin and I decided to share the Buffalo Wings (S$12.90), since it was so good the first time I had them. Upon placing our order, we were warned that it was going to be pretty spicy as they were going to be coated in buffalo sauce made with bird’s eye chilli. I wasn’t worried, since my cousin who came with me, is an absolute chilli fiend – the kind who will drink spicy kuah asam pedas like a soup.

Consistent with my previous assessment, the buffalo wings were SO GOOD!!!! So juicy, and savoury. A mixture of spicy, sweet, and sour at the same time, just so delicious. I didn’t find the sauce too overwhelmingly hot, and even if I did, the sour cream dip would have done the trick to pare it down. The chicken skin had absorbed the flavours of the buffalo wings sauce, while still retaining some of its crispiness, which was great. Definitely a must-order here. 10/10

For my mains, I ordered the R.E.V. Brazen Beef (S$27.90), which is the striploin steak sliced into several cuts (the term for it is Tagliata I think, which is Italian for sliced steak). I ordered it in medium done-ness, and it came accompanied with fries, salad, and chilli aioli:

I had wanted so badly to like the striploin, since I was looking for a serious contender to Krave’s amazing steak. The first bite did have me impressed – the beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender – but after a few more bites I realised it wasn’t really as flavourful as I’d wanted it to be. The beef ended up tasting a little bland, so I had to keep eating it with the chilli aioli for more flavour. So while the texture was really tender, I thought the taste needed some improvement. The salad wasn’t bad, pretty standard and enjoyable. I thought the fries were a little soggy and I didn’t appreciate those green bits on it – I think they were seaweed? Or some sort of herb. Personally I prefer my steak fries to be hot, thick-cut, and with no other frills. Overall this dish was slightly disappointing – I would probably want to try the Asparagus Beef on my next visit though. 7/10

My cousin tried the R.E.V. Smoked Duck (S$24.90), which came with herb-roasted potatoes, salad, and a cup of home-made spicy sauce:

I LOVED the roasted baby potatoes – it tasted of rosemary and, well, good old potato. I don’t think I’ve ever had bad rosemary potatoes, come to think of it. The smoked duck itself, while savoury and flavourful, tasted a little dry. This I thought was disappointing. Before my second bite of this, I dunked the smoked duck meat into the spicy sauce, which mitigated the dryness a little.  7/10

For dessert, we decided on the Mango Crême Brûlée (S$9.90), because truthfully it sounded delicious, and also we wanted some sort of comparison with Krave’s signature Cempedak Crème Brûlée.

I really loved the taste of the mango custard; it was top notch. Sweet, mangoey, and with the perfect custardy consistency (creamy and soft, but with some body). I thought the burnt sugar layer at the top was a little too think/soft – they should have burnt it a little longer, or added more sugar really. I really love the slightly bitter taste of burnt sugar, which I thought would have complemented the sweet mango custard really well, but alas the bitter taste was not at all strong. I must say I really loved the colours of this dish, and the actual mango custard which was so, so delicious. Too bad about the caramelised shell. My cousin and I still preferred the Cempedak rendition of it from Krave, as it’s more special, with the distinct and strong cempedak taste adding some welcome bitterness to the dish. 8/10

Not as thick as I would have liked. Although I wouldn’t have liked it too sweet, this to me tasted a little bland.

HOW PRETTYYYYYY. I didn’t taste this Mint Mocha Latte, but it looks absolutely luxurious on the deep red saucer, against the wooden table.

All in all, I think Royz et Vous still has some room for improvement, although it moving to Telok Ayer is a step in the right direction (more halal options in the Singapore CBD please!). The buffalo wings are the cat’s pajamas, and I really loved the quiet, laid-back, high-ceilinged ambience of the restaurant. It’s a cool space, and I hope they stay there a long time — long enough to improve on the mains! I will definitely go back to try the other stuff, insyaa Allah.

Service is very friendly, and because it is (a) a full-service restaurant that (b) accepts credit cards and (c) sits in the CBD area, I think you could actually go to Royz et Vous not just with your friends and family, but also with business partners for a low-key business lunch or dinner.
