Last Saturday I went to Arab St – not for Arabic class at Al Markaz, because I haven’t gotten my exam results yet and therefore do not know if I can advance to the next level (maybe I failed boohoo!!! Ugh). Instead, I went to run errands with my mum, before heading to my favourite Victory Restaurant for some grub.

Victory was established literally over a century ago in 1910, and has been a staple of the Arab St/Kampong Glam neighbourhood since. My family has been quite partial to Victory in lieu of its rival neighbour Zam Zam, so this will not be a comparison post, although I hear the murtabak at Zam Zam is tougher than Victory’s. (Gosh is this another Puncak vs Cahaya?) Anyway we sat upstairs in the airconditioned dining area and had our orders taken by this elderly and diligent Indian uncle I’ve seen several times in the past.

Here’s a look at the menu:

Which other establishment offers 5-6 tiers of pricing for their murtabak!!

Dranks not very visible, sorry!

I got my usual small Beef Murtabak (S$5) with no onion (yuck):

Yehhmeeeeee look at the beef spilling out

So I love this, right. It’s always so delicious. There are some purists who will tell me either that (a) it tastes infinitely better with onion, or (b) that chicken murtabak is the real signature at Victory. My response is, feel free to order that while I eat the version that I prefer, thank you.  Anyway the murtabak here is really good. They are very generous with the meat filling, and the dough is crispy at some parts and tender at others. The curry that accompanies the murtabak is also tasty and slightly spicy – I usually drink a couple of spoonfuls of the curry alone right after my food arrives, because it’s so good. 9/10

My mum ordered the Mutton Briyani (S$6.50):

The cucumber in tomato sauce came with the murtabak, but I readily offered it up to my mum since I’m not naturally a raw vegetable type of person.

A closer look

According to my mum the briyani here is usually really good but for some reason that day the mutton was weird and rather dry/grainy. I didn’t taste it because I’m not the biggest fan of briyani (omg except for the one I had at this Pakistani hole-in-the-wall family establishment called Khushbu in London, on Osborne St near the entrance of Brick Lane further ahead! LIFE-CHANGING BRIYANI. Please have it if you’re headed to London sometime.)

Back to the Briyani at Victory though, my mum barely finished it, which is sad. I will conisder this an exception since she eats the Victory briyani every couple of weeks or so, and it’s mostly been delicious in the past.

Anyway bad briyani or not, I will definitely keep coming back here to Victory to enjoy their cheap and delicious murtabak. It is a pity they don’t open past 11pm to cater to the supper crowds, but I guess you can walk down North Bridge Road to The Ramen Stall for that!
